Former Orlando police Chief Val Demings' campaign for Florida's 10th Congressional District is getting an advertising boost from a political action committee launched by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The Bloomberg-founded Independence USA PAC announced its endorsement Wednesday and began airing a TV ad on local broadcast and cable stations.
The PAC also posted the video on its website.
The ad features footage of Demings' recent on-stage remarks at the Democratic National Convention, followed by narration: "Val Demings, bringing police and communities together to fight gun violence and reduce crime, mentoring and educating our children, keeping them safe. Val Demings for Congress: putting Central Florida families first."
Independence USA supported Demings in her unsuccessful 2012 bid to unseat Rep. Daniel Webster, but said in a statement that she is the first U.S. House candidate and first Floridian to recieve the PAC's backing in this year's races.
“Few people in America have done more to fight gun violence than Val Demings," Bloomberg said in a statement. "She will be a powerful leader in Congress on day one to pass sensible laws to protect all Americans from illegal guns."
