U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer, the current House minority whip, has endorsed former Orlando police Chief Val Demings in her campaign for District 10, her campaign announced Friday.
In a statement distributed by the campaign, Hoyer called Demings a "focused leader with an unparalleled ability to bring together diverse communities."
"Val Demings is the kind of leader we need to advocate on behalf of Florida's 10th District," the Maryland Democrat said. "Her long record of delivering results on behalf of her community makes me confident she has the skills needed to serve the people of Orlando."
Demings said she has known Hoyer since her 2012 campaign. She called him a "key ally in the effort to ensure that all Americans are able to vote without unfair obstacles," and a leader in efforts to create jobs and safeguard natural resources.
"I am grateful for his continued support, and look forward to working with him to tackle the problems facing our families in Central Florida," she said.
Demings faces three opponents in the race for Disrict 10, all of them Democrats: former state party Chairman Bob Poe, state Sen. Geraldine Thompson and attorney Fatima Fahmy.
The incumbent, Republican Rep. Dan Webster, is running in District 11.
